Indeed, the seventh generation of the 7 Series will first be offered in an electric version, before enriching the offer with internal combustion engines and plug-in hybrids. At Mercedes, the strategy is different. The star brand chose to separate the designs. The EQS is not just an electric derivative of the S-Class, it has its own platform and architecture. On the other hand, there is only one 7 series. BMW has chosen to offer a long version that stretches to more than 5.39 m against 5.22 m for the EQS.

For its first electric luxury limousine, BMW didn’t want to rush a clientele of CEOs and heads of state. The electric variant is therefore identical to its thermal alter ego. It incorporates key developments such as double XXL bean light (optional) and bi-level lights that can benefit from Swarowzki crystal projectors, the equivalent of Digital light in a Mercedes.

The EQS design is above all thought for aerodynamics. The general appearance of the limousine is closer to a sedan-coupe than a three-volume sedan like its competitor. Special wheels with deflectors, opening door handles and optimized screens allow the car to have a higher air permeability than the BMW i7 (CX * Mercedes EQS: 0.20 / CX BMW i7: 0.24). A key factor in maximizing efficiency.

As proof, the experience starts outside, as these two cars are equipped with motorized doors that you unlock using your smartphone. From the beginning, EQS creates a show with “Hyperekran”. Full digital dashboard. Something unheard of in the series production history of the car. The driver and his passengers can take advantage of all the possibilities offered by the car. The i7’s interior is more sober. There is no avalanche of screens, there are two, in a row. This new arrangement made it possible to incorporate almost invisible aerators.

Except for the light dressing
Aside from the “Crystal” light wrap, the i7’s cockpit plays it sober. Build quality and onboard technology are exceptional.

The best way to appreciate a limousine is to sit in the back seats. And there, both rivals strike, offering ventilated, massaged and heated workspaces as well as individual control systems.
