I switched from Model 3 to Model Y and don’t regret a thing (or hardly any)

Switching from a Tesla Model 3 to a Model Y has many advantages, but not only. From selling one of the first Tesla Model 3s to France to the size differences with the new Tesla Model Y Propulsion, we’ll be back here with more details on the experience.

The Tesla Model 3 arrived in France in the first quarter of 2019 and I took delivery of the Long Autonomy version during the first deliveries. About two years ago I posted the first report here after 70,000 kilometers. We left after 135 thousand kilometers.

The arrival of the Tesla Model Y Propulsion sped up the process a bit, as we had an order for the Tesla Model Y Performance at the base. We’ll go back in detail to the various choices made below that resulted in the delivery of the Tesla Model Y Drivetrain in late 2022. As well as the advantages and disadvantages of one over the other.

Selling the Tesla Model 3 is a tough job

The opportune time to sell a Tesla Model 3 at a good price is now over, especially given the volume of used models available. Indeed, there are still plenty of Tesla Model 3s available today, whether on classifieds sites or on the Tesla website.

Especially at the end of the year, Tesla even allowed to sell a few of them to make sure of sales, and Tesla proved that selling Model 3 was not easy then. Gilded age foreign importers bought a French Tesla for more than the price of a new one, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to start going up again anytime soon.

What assets did our Tesla Model 3 leave to stand out, both old and compared to others – high mileage at the time of sale – 135,000 kilometers? Fortunately, the configuration was quite rare (Grande Autonomie, blue, white interior) and the options (fully autonomous driving) could interest people looking for a good price Tesla with all the necessary equipment.

Therefore, our Tesla Model Y Performance order found a buyer during the month of December. I essentially wrote an addendum during the Tesla Model Y Performance test to try it was to accept it. Why then switch to a Tesla Model Y Speed?

Tesla Model Y Propulsion: reason choice

At the time of writing this article, A Tesla Model Y Performance with an equivalent configuration costs €22,000 more than a Tesla Model Y Propulsion.. For this price difference, the Performance certainly offers some advantages: increased range (514 kilometers versus 455 kilometers), all-wheel drive instead of rear-wheel drive, and an unrelated 0 to 100 km/h sprint (3 . 6.9 seconds versus 7 seconds).

However, when making a purchase decision, it is important to consider what is important to each person and what might be of value to you. In our case, long journeys are important, but less than 30 minutes are lost on a 500-kilometer trip compared to the Performance in Tesla Model Y Propulsion.this is acceptable.

The advantages of the 2022 Tesla Model Y Propulsion compared to the 2019 Tesla Model 3 are many, as we find, among other things, double glazing, increased comfort, a heat pump, better sound insulation thanks to AMD processor Ryzen for better fluidity. screen or even a huge (and electric) trunk makes it a very practical car and a heated steering wheel.

Finally, at the end of 2022, Tesla offered a great benefit for senior drivers: free Supercharge. In practice, we were offered about 2500 kWh, which still means a Supercharge of more than 1500 euros. Others have even been able to restore a Tesla Model Y for under €41,000 Making this car a very reasonable choice in the final days of 2022. Today it also revealed the starting price of the Tesla Model Y for the start of 2023, following a massive price drop across the range.

Just a car without merits

While the transition from the Tesla Model 3 to the Model Y brings its perks, it’s not all perfect. Indeed, first of all, we go from the Long Autonomy version (78 kWh battery) to the Fast version with a significantly smaller battery (62 kWh)..

After nearly four years and 135,000 kilometers on the clock, the Tesla Model 3’s battery reportedly showed less than 68 kWh (approximately) of residual capacity. 13% degradation). So it’s only a theoretical difference of 9% instead of 21% if both batteries were new.

Along with the small battery, we will Loses power from Supercharge, because new Teslas generally charge less quickly than older ones. Moreover, the LFP battery that powers the Tesla Model Y Propulsion is more sensitive to cold temperatures, requiring more frequent preconditioning of the battery prior to rapid charging.

The consumption of the Tesla Model Y is significantly higher at high speeds, but the fast charging network in France is developed enough that this is no longer a problem. In 2019, it may be difficult to cross France in an electric car if the battery is too tight and consumption is not optimized, but that is ancient history.

Finally, we drive a car with all-wheel drive (front engine and rear engine), but it has little impact on a daily basis. Indeed, the Tesla is, for the most part, a drive, even if it has a front engine. Thus, the consumption is optimized and the front engine starts only in certain situations (strong acceleration, loss of grip or battery preconditioning). Daily driving sensations are therefore not upset by the disappearance of the front engine..

Which car for which profile?

Tesla’s two most popular cars have a lot in common, but they’re still different when it comes to handling. Tesla Model 3 is a very attractive car, it has a very sporty style, where we really end up down. Hard driving enthusiasts will be delighted on the mountain roads where the driving sensations are complete.

On the side of the Tesla Model Y, we are much higher than anything else (18 centimeters more for an SUV), and although the seats are the same, we prefer the road in a less sporty position. this being if you have passengers in the back, surely they will prefer to travel in Tesla Model Yoffers useful volume and more legroom.

In addition, Getting the Tesla Model 3 off the ground can be problematic in many cases: underground parking lots, speed bumps, etc. Fortunately, this is not a problem with the Tesla Model Y.

Why stay with Tesla

In conclusion, above all else, we can ask ourselves why should we stay with Tesla in 2023? Indeed, there are excellent electric cars available from many other manufacturers and the Supercharger network is no longer essential, especially now that it is partially open to all vehicles. Plus, Tesla’s inherent problems and CEO Elon Musk’s broken promises may put some off.

Recently, the manufacturer removed the ultrasonic sensors from its cars after abandoning the radar, which may help the transition to other more consistent and less volatile brands.

Unfortunately for the competition, so far, in terms of driving feel, single-pedal control, on-board software and passenger safety, Tesla is the top of the class. All of this is part of the reason why a significant number of Tesla drivers stick with the brand when it comes time to switch vehicles, despite its flaws.

More importantly, with the recent drop in Model 3 and Model Y prices around the world, Tesla is stifling the competition. Currently priced at €41,990 and €39,990 respectively, the Model Y Propulsion and Model 3 Propulsion are excellent value for money.

However, some brands have chosen to offer such a good price/performance ratio, but at lower prices, such as Tesla’s MG4 reserved for big budgets. This will no doubt evolve in the future with the arrival of a much cheaper model in a few years.

Tesla terms: here's our basic guide to understanding the automaker's jargon

Many Tesla owners use a language that has some characteristics associated with the characteristics of Elon Musk’s company. Don’t panic, this guide will help you find your way through the terms…
