Compact sedans: electrified 2023 vintage

So, let’s start with the electric motors launched in the new model Renault Megane E-Tech on the road since last summer. This model is built on the special CMF-EV platform, which is also used for the compact SUV Nissan Ariya discussed below. This Mégane E-Tech is therefore equipped with an electric motor with two outputs: 130 hp/250 Nm (€35,200) in the EV40 and 220 hp/300 Nm (€40,200) in the EV60.

This 130 hp EV40 version is equipped with a 40 kWh battery for a range of 300 km, with a 7 kW Standard Charge AC charger. The EV40 can also be equipped with a Boost Charge AC charger with a capacity of 22 kW and 85 kW (+ €2,000) in DC. On the 220 hp EV60, the Megane E-Tech gets a 7 kW AC and 130 kW DC Supercharger as standard. At Optimum Charge, which costs €1,700 more, the charger goes to 22kW in AC and stays at 130kW in DC.

Electric e-308

Peugeot From the spring of 2023, the electric version of the 308 will not be long before it meets the main French rival, which was launched a year and a half ago. At that time, this compact adopts the latest generation of eMotors 157 hp / 260 Nm electric motor, which will gradually replace the old 136 hp motor in all Stellantis series. for’e-308, the battery reaches 51 kWh for 400 km of autonomy. The on-board charger has a capacity of 100 kW in DC and 11 kW in AC. Prices will be announced in early 2023. In the summer, the Citroën ë-C4 will in turn receive this 157 hp electric motor and 51 kW battery pack before the Opel e-Astra in the fall.

Still in Stellantis DS4A year after its launch, it gets some modifications in its engines E-Voltage 225hp/27g PHEV. This results in the arrival of a new battery that slightly increases the transmitted power and, therefore, the autonomy with its energy density and chemical composition. For the premium compact, this distance ranges from 55 km to 62 km and costs 41,100 euros. This modification affects other models in the DS (DS 7 and DS 9 PHEV) Citroën (C5 Aircross PHEV), Opel (Astra and Grandland PHEV) and Peugeot (308 and 3008-5008 PHEV) series.

If innovations are important for national manufacturers, competitors from Europe or Asia are more in the background. So this is a restyling first and foremost Mercedes A-Class and its monospace type derivative Class B that should be noted. And the range of engines is updated with some updates for this second half of life.

Changes in Mercedes

That’s why Mercedes adopts 48 V hybridization with starter-alternator in the 10 kW/13.6 hp Renault-derived 1.3 turbo gasoline: 136 hp A180 and 163 hp A200, both 133-145 g . Also in 2.0 turbodiesel: A180d with 116 hp and 200d with 150 hp at 128-145 g, standard with a dual-clutch automatic gearbox. PHEV A 250e and B 250e engines are eligible for a slightly more powerful 5 kW electric motor with 109 hp. This brings total power to 218bhp for a range of 70-81km versus the previous 62-73km, while the battery remains at 15.6kWh. CO2 does not change at 18-25 g. On the other hand, the charger moves to 11kWh versus the previous 7.4kWh. Pricing for deliveries in early 2023 will be announced soon.

on the side Toyotamid-life restyling of the compact Corolla it comes with two engine upgrades in the sedan and wagon. In the 1.8, the full-hybrid HEV increases to 140 hp, or 18 hp, and the 2.0 to 196 hp, or 12 hp. An increase achieved thanks to a more powerful electric motor. So CO2 remains the same at 102-104 g at 122 hours (€33,900 in Dynamic Business) and 107-111 g at 184 hours (€34,450 in Dynamic Business). This is the case for the Touring Sport break, whose price is increased by €1,000 per equivalent CO2. Note that these prices, current model prices, will probably be re-evaluated for the next vintage in March 2023.

A 140hp full hybrid HEV borrowed from the Clio will slide under the front hood of the Dacia Jogger. Therefore CO2 should logically drop below 120g from the current LPG-powered 1.0 EcoG 100hp. Prices will be announced in early 2023.

Toyota is new

But Toyota’s big innovation in this segment of compact sedans remains the marketing of the fifth-generation Prius in the second quarter of 2023. This prius It uses the RAV4’s TNGA-C platform and its 148bhp 2.0 platform, along with a 160bhp electric motor for a maximum output of 223bhp. The rechargeable battery shows 13.6 kWh. We know neither consumption nor autonomy.

Another expected arrival in the segment is a 140 hp full hybrid HEV engine under the front hood. Dacia Jogger, taken directly from Clio: 1.6 4-cyl. 91 hp, supported by a 49 hp electric motor and a 20 hp alternator-starter. CO2 should logically drop below 120g from the current LPG-powered 1.0 EcoG 100hp. Pricing will be revealed when it goes on sale in early 2023.
