Elon Musk talks about an alternative to iOS and Android, is the threat serious?

Although he already has trouble managing Twitter (the first release of the new paid version caused chaos), Elon Musk does not rule out the idea of creating an alternative to smartphones running iOS or Android to break the Apple duopoly. and Google in this market. In response to a recent publication, the boss of Twitter and Tesla mentioned this.

“If Apple and Google remove Twitter from their app stores, @Elon Musk should make his own smartphone. Half the country would be happy to get rid of the biased and harmful iPhone and Android. Man building rockets to Mars, a stupid little smartphone should be easy, right?we read in this publication.

In response, Musk stated that he did not hope to come to this, but if he had no choice, he would create this alternative smartphone.

Why might Twitter be at odds with Apple and Google?

The arrival of Elon Musk has caused major changes at Twitter. For example, it puts the paid version at the center of the platform’s monetization strategy.

If Twitter already offered a subscription before Musk’s arrival, today the social network wants to offer a more expensive subscription, giving access to the blue verification badge for $8, in particular. Twitter’s first attempt to launch this new service failed because some used this easy access to the certificate badge to impersonate companies.

Also remember that Musk recently offered an “amnesty” to accounts banned by the platform. As the company faces mass layoffs, it wonders if it can properly manage its platform.

The problem is that if Twitter is too lax in moderation, it could be banned from the app stores by Apple and/or Google. For example, after the occupation of the US Capitol in January 2021, Google suspended the Talk app from the Play Store.

Considered a more authoritative alternative to Twitter, this social network returned to the Android app store only in September.

Moderation and commission of the store

In addition to the risk of Twitter being banned by Apple and/or Google for very poor moderation, there is also a potential conflict between Elon Musk and these two companies over store commissions. As mentioned above, the new paid version of Twitter, $8, is a priority for Musk.

This makes sense because it would allow Twitter to be less dependent on advertisers. However, as you already know, app stores take a commission (15%-30%) on in-app purchases.

Musk recently spoke about this. “App store prices are too high because of the iOS/Android duopoly. This is the 30% hidden tax on the internet”he wrote in his reply.

Easier said than done

In summary, Elon Musk will have many good reasons to create an alternative platform to Apple and Google. However, breaking the duopoly of these two tech giants in mobile operating systems will not be a simple task, even with the capabilities of Elon Musk.

Many organizations have already tried to create alternatives to iOS and Android, but none of these attempts have achieved the expected success. We can show examples of Tizen OS from Samsung, Firefox OS or Windows 10 Mobile from Microsoft.

Elon Musk would have the funds to develop a smartphone. It can also develop a new operating system (or use the open source code of Android, like Huawei).

The concern is that for the new platform to attract the masses, it needs to have a catalog of apps that can compete with the App Store and Play Store. You have to convince the developers to have more applications. However, for a platform to be interesting to developers, it must have a sufficient user base.
