Disputed assets declaration: Caroline Cayeux quits government


ECaroline Cayeux, who has flouted the High Authority for Transparency in Public Life (HATVP), resigned on Monday as ministerial representative for local authorities after declaring assets deemed “undervalued”.

“After I submitted my asset declaration, the High Authority for Transparency in Public Life told me that it was understated,” he said.

He claims to have “considered his observations” and “adjusted”, but “despite this, the High Authority for Transparency in Public Life continues to question my sincerity”.

The 74-year-old former mayor of Beauvais therefore explains that he decided to resign “so as not to interfere with the government’s activities”.

The Elysee had previously announced that it had terminated Ms Cayeux’s duties “at her request” and that her powers would be taken over by her colleague in charge of Agriculture, Dominique Faure. The latter rose from the post of state secretary to the rank of ministerial representative.

Contacted by AFP, HATVP said it would not immediately be contacted pending a meeting of its college on Tuesday.

Asked about that statement, Ms. Cayeux said last July: “Obviously I stand by my word. But I’ve always said that if the law is passed, I will enforce it.” Then he added: “I have to tell you all that I have a lot of friends among these people. Frankly, I was badly tested and I was very upset.”

The use of the phrase “those people” to refer to same-sex couples has caused protests. Ms Cayeux later announced she “regretted” her “stupid and clumsy” remarks.

The opposition was quick to sneer at these new failures of the government.

“This transition to the government as fast as lightning! Absolute money and Macronie, it’s a never-ending story?”, mocked Sébastien Chenu, RN vice-president of the National Assembly.

He owed his portfolio to the Collectives knowing their secrets well. When he came to government in July 2022, he was head of the National Agency for Territorial Cohesion (ANCT), a public body sought by Emmanuel Macron to ensure coordination between State and local authorities.

Mayor of Beauvais since 2001, since 2014 he heads the “Villes de France” association, which unites areas with 20,000 to 100,000 inhabitants.

Politically, Ms Cayeux proved herself to be an unwavering supporter of Francois Fillon in the 2012 UMP primaries and then in the 2017 presidential election. Despite his work, he did not let her go.

It was in 2018 that he slammed the door of the Republicans by disagreeing with Laurent Wauquiez. A partisan breakaway supported by the Republic in March did not prevent him from being re-elected under a different right-wing label in the first round of the 2020 municipal elections in Beauvais. He was an active supporter of Emmanuel Macron in the 2022 presidential elections.
